Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online Ep 3

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Episode 3: "Fan Alphabetic character" Review

"To put it not so nicely, you came to escape."

Warning: Total spoilers for the episode below.
With a 2d episode significantly better than the premiere, my expectations to continue the graphic symbol development rolling was high for episode three of Sword Fine art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, "Fan Letter." This episode continues the rewind the second presented, giving us further insight into what the Squad Jam actually is and why LLENN decided to participate. Or rather, why she was pushed into participating. It'due south important context for sure, simply instead of building the fire, information technology only maintains the embers.Much of this episode is focused on LLENN's new friend, Pitohui. Pitohui is still very much cloaked in mystique and ambiguity, simply her no-nonsense attitude really shines here. Nearly immediately we see their interactions turn from somewhat innocent fun and teasing to something a little deeper. Pitohui calls LLENN out on her reasons for playing the game, and relates to them in her ain way.

Sword Art Online Alternative Episode iii

While we don't know Pitohui'south existent-world identity notwithstanding, we know that she too is playing GGO as a ways of escape. Hunting monsters and PVP battles are a release for her, and she seems to want LLENN to see GGO the same way. Maybe that's why she introduces Squad Jam to LLENN–to push her across her condolement zone and to do something new, though it'south hard to tell Pitohui's true intentions.

Besides introducing LLENN to her sketchy friend M, Pitohui leaves LLENN with piddling help for the Team Jam. She doesn't even explain what LLENN'southward role in the tournament will really be and gives her a lame excuse for why they tin can't pair up themselves. While there are probably perfectly valid reasons for this that will be explained later, right at present, Pitohui comes off every bit flakey and unreliable. Merely the stakes are high for LLENN'due south real-world counterpart Karen likewise–she's only going to participate if her friend Miyu can't become them tickets to run across their favorite singer/songwriter Elsa Kanzaki. Whamp, whamp. She doesn't go the tickets.

Nearly halfway through the episode, nosotros get to see LLENN'southward skills shine again. M wants to run into what her abilities actually are and how he tin can use her in the tournament. He has a strategy, but we can encounter he'southward non existence one-hundred percent with her. Though, he does respect her skills, and again nosotros encounter that he doesn't infantilize her in the slightest. Regardless of his intentions, it seems he wants to push her in the same ways that Pitohui does.

While LLENN is shaping upwardly to be a pretty cruel Thespian Killer, it's in moments like learning how to use the pocketknife that we see that naive and softer side of her. She's undeniably skilled, and we run into that in her training session with Thousand, merely she's non invulnerable. The sheer surprise and girlish fearfulness she shows as she unsheathes the combat knife and quickly sheaths it again, shows this. I think that'southward what separates her story and background from SAO'due south core narrative. LLENN's not ungodly good from the start. While her skills develop quickly, we exercise get to meet those develop to some extent. Information technology'south nice to finally meet a graphic symbol that isn't invincible for no reason other than carrying the story along.

It'due south a good thing to see that LLENN and Pitohui aren't falling into typical tropes and refreshing to encounter that this chapter of SAO isn't a harem story either. But fifty-fifty so, information technology falls apartment in its ambiguity. It'southward hard to tell what I should reasonably expect from this cast and from the plot because information technology'south still establishing itself. It's conspicuously intentionally taking its time telling this story, merely information technology doesn't experience like it's at the correct pace. Information technology feels like it's property itself back and that hesitance is costing its direction.

Things are however warming upwards for this season, just it feels lukewarm. It's difficult to gauge what I should expect considering there's a huge part of me that wants this flavor to blow the entire serial out of the h2o and into a new age with deep characters and fantastic action. It has a ton of potential to do then with its female person leads and the prowess they carry in the world of GGO. It'south good that it'southward taking its fourth dimension flesh out its bandage and make them characters that can be cared about because that's what the core narrative of SAO was lacking. Just the characters alone aren't gripping plenty to make me care for this story, especially since its direction hasn't really been set in stone.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Episode 3: "Fan Letter" Review

okay

SAO Alternative'southward management is refreshing in the sense that information technology is focusing on fleshing out its characters, but "Fan Alphabetic character" only maintains the bear witness's slow burn.
